Julie's Newspaper Article

June 30, 2008
Go nuts this summer
By Julie H. Peterson, Clark County Health Department
Garfield, the famous fat cat created by Jim Davis, gives us some dietary counsel which we should kindly dis-regard: “Avoid fruits and nuts. After all, you are what you eat.”
Researchers have proven time and time again that the addition of nuts to a healthy diet is not associated with weight gain, but is actually more closely related to weight loss when used in moderation.
Nonetheless, our friendly feline is definitely correct that “you are what you eat.” Nuts are a highly nutritious and power-packed food that offers many health related benefits.
The U.S. Food and Drug Administration has announced the following qualified health claim for nuts as they relate to heart disease: “Scientific evidence suggests 1.5 ounces per day of most nuts as part of a diet low in saturated fat and cholesterol may reduce the risk of heart disease.”
This health claim has currently been approved for almonds, hazelnuts, peanuts, pecans, pine nuts, pistachios and walnuts. Each of these nuts has 4 grams or less of saturated fat per every 50 grams consumed.
So what is a serving size of each of these nuts? What is 1.5 ounces? If you don’t have a kitchen scale, you’re in luck. Use the following guidelines from the International Tree Nut Council to round out one serving of heart-healthy nuts: almonds, 20 to 24 nuts; Brazil nuts, 6 to 8; pecans, 18 to 20 nuts; pine nuts, 150 to 157 nuts; pistachios, 45 to 47 nuts; walnuts, 6 to 11 halves; hazelnuts, 15 to 20 nuts; macadamias, 10 to 12 nuts; and cashews, 16 to 18 nuts.
What about the rumor that nuts are high in fat? Well, yes, it’s not just a rumor. Nuts are fairly high in fat, but most of that is unsaturated fat, such as polyunsaturated (PUFA) and monounsaturated (MUFA). PUFAs and MUFAs can remarkably decrease your LDL or “bad” cholesterol levels.
When trying to integrate nuts into your diet, try using them as a substitute for a less healthy option, rather than just an addition to your current diet. For example, try eating a handful of nuts instead of snacking on potato chips.
Another option would be when you are baking cookies, rather than adding chocolate chips, sprinkle in some fresh roasted nuts of your choice. Nuts have the ability to keep you full for a longer period of time; this can help you keep those food cravings at bay when used in moderation. Nuts are an excellent choice when planning a weight loss diet.
Nuts have other health benefits besides helping to reduce your risk of heart disease. Nuts contain antioxidants and phytochemicals which may help to prevent other chronic diseases such as the development of cancer, diabetes, cataracts and lung and cardiovascular disease. Nuts are also a healthy option in obtaining sufficient protein in your diet.
Consider adding a flavorful boost to your diet this summer, and add additional health benefits through your favorite nut selections. Nuts go great with just about any recipe. Here are some suggestions from the International Tree Nut Council:
— Go meatless: Nuts are a great source of protein. Toss them into stir-frys, salads and pasta.
— Top with nuts: Sprinkle chopped nuts on a bowl of soup, veggie dish or your favorite casserole.
— Start your day with nuts: Experiment with different tree nuts in your favorite muffin or pancake recipes. Sprinkle nuts on yogurt or hot or cold cereal.
— Nuts are great with cheese: Add tree nuts to cheese and fruit platters and serve as an appetizer or a special dessert.
Remember: Nuts can be stored up to six months in the refrigerator and up to a year when kept in the freezer, according to the International Tree Nut Council. Liven up your diet; find a new favorite “nutty” recipe and enjoy yourself this summer!

Move it!

In order to get my kids to step up their activity level, I got them each a pedometer. They've been dying to go to King's Island, so, I informed them that if they could walk there, I'd take them. So, now even when they are watching TV, or need something to do, they run in place, they run up and down the stairs over and over, they even argue about who gets to take the dog for a walk. Ali runs in place while she watches TV, it's been great! The best part of it is that when bedtime approaches, they are exhausted! I love it! It's the best purchase I've made all year.
The pedometers were more than affordable---only $2.99 each--- they are multicolored so they all have their own color, Ali's is pink, Zach's is white and Tay has a black one. Go to Amazon.com and type in pedometer, it's the 3rd one down I believe, "Multifunction Pedometer with Steps, Distance & Calories." I decided that I'm going to continue on with this too! I'm going to have a prize, or a benefit of some sort for each week, or maybe each month--like a date with daddy, or maybe a hike with mom---something that still has to do with activity--perhaps bowling or swimming---anyway, I wanted to share with you my success in getting my kids moving! They fight less, they play more! What more could you ask for??? (Besides a million bucks so you can fill your gas tank).

birthday boy.

So today is six months from Christmas, which in turn means that a certain boy turned 1 today...Hurray for dante! strange to think that I have a son at all, let alone a one year old.
So Dante began his morning at three (he has been sick). We brought him into bed and there he proceeded to pinch the crap out of me and Alyse. He spent the rest of the day with his mom, till she had to work then he got to see his grandparents. Mom and Dad are the best..well they are free so what else could I ask for. (they really are the best) On the way home from Elk ridge he got to face the front for the first time. (car seat rules are that he cant be facing forward til he is one) He loved it. Then for the next few hours he ran around screaming, bitting, crying and eating.
Alyse got home and Brought him some cake. he went at it with both hands and destroyed all the frosting, the cake found the floor. It was a huge milestone in life for me to have a kids birthday, I remember zachs first and thought then that i thought it would be cool to be the dad, I was right what an aswesome feeling.

I will end it here but I love that kid more than I ever thought I could and I look forward to a million more birthdays with him.

Break a leg

Well today is not a good day for me. I was at work and coming down a set of stairs when one of the cement stairs that are set in rebar broke loose and I went through it. I managed to twist as I fell and absorbed most of the impact on my wrist and other ankle as my leg went through the gap. My leg was cut up pretty bad but I sure showed those stairs it will be a long time before they mess with me after I got myself extracted and managed to stop all the bleeding. I cussed them out so good they are nice and afraid of me. So after the doctor visit he told me I have a badly bruised left wrist, a huge bloody mess of scratches on my left leg that are turning a nice purple color, a badly bruised right leg and an extremely badly bruised left leg, and ankle. I don't publish all this for simpathy (but feel free to give it to me) but because after it was over and even though it hurts I thought about how it could of been so much worse and what would of happened if I had fallen even worse and broken my neck or something I worry about what my girls and wife would do. Then it came to me in the middle of my freaking out, a nice warm feeling came over me because I realized that even if something did happen I had my own family that would help my children and wife if they ever needed it. This was quite a comfort even though I was really hurting. It just goes to show that it sometimes takes something shocking to make you realize all the good your family does for you.

Love you all
Justin

Bryce's Little Guardian Angel

I was watching the news this morning and thinking (yep! I do that once in a while), Bryce must have his own little guardian angel. Do you all recall how many times he's been in the path of what could potentially be a deadly situation, and he comes out unscathed? Disaster seems to follow just behind him, I've decided he can never come to my house--as soon as he leaves my house will get blown away in a tornadic frenzy (just kidding Bryce--I'd love for you guys to come). I'm grateful today for the safety of my family, wherever they might be. I'm so grateful the Bryce and Christy Hayes family have returned to the states. Although it's not the safest place in the world, at least we have each other.

With so many disasters and scary things happening around the world, I feel like our family is coming closer together, that we've overcome any petty differences we may have had as kids. I am amazed at the awesome family that I have and I take every opportunity to tell people what a great family I have.

Bryce--I hope that all your friends in the Philippines are okay, I know you must be worried about those you left behind.

Streaker at Walmart!

So I went to WalMart with the girls today and as I walked in, I looked back and Olivia had her sundress completely off! It was very typical behavior for her. So Justin is happy to see his cat while I have learned my lesson- evidently I didn't drop him off far enough away from us. He came back at 3 in the morning and I didn't get any sleep for the rest of the night because everytime I would doze off, he would come in meowing. Linda was sweet enough to come over in the morning and help with the kids so that I could get some rest. The twins have officially been accepted into preschool in the fall. Hard to believe they are that old! Olivia is singing her ABC's. She can sing the whole ABC song. I am so proud. She's just a lot more academic than Laura.

Kentucky Fried What???

This is the most disguting thing I have ever seen. As many of you know, Kentucky has been plagued by the cicada--a horrid screeching menace. So, since there are clouds of them circling the city, someone, somewhere, decided they were tired of squirrel, and they fried up cicadas. Oh! I'm dry heaving just thinking about it!

Tuesday June 17, 2008
Deeeeelicious: Sun staff took a different approach to its research on the 17-year cicada Hint: It involves Crisco
By Acquanetta G. Donnell Jr.
People in Winchester have gotten used to the noisy 17-year cicadas being everywhere, but it may take longer to get used to the taste.
For the Sun’s Monday Webcast, reporters Mike Wynn and Katheran Wasson invited some people downtown for lunch. While other staff members shot video, Wynn rolled a few bugs in a light brown, seasoned batter, fried them in oil at 325 degrees, waited for them to cool off, then served them to visitors.
Attorney William Elkins, one of the participants in the cicada tasting, said, “It was just an irresistible temptation when (Wynn) invited me to join him in the sampling of this local delicacy.”
With several Sun staffers and passersby making up what Wasson referred to as the newspaper’s “first-ever audience” for its Webcast, Wynn, Elkins, Sun Community Editor Rachel Parsons, Clark County Emergency Management Director Gary Epperson and County Judge-Executive Henry Branham all sampled the deep-fried insects.
Not everyone could believe his or her eyes as the tasters popped the bugs into their mouths and chewed.
“Oh, my word!” said one woman, as others laughed.
“I think it sort of has a hushpuppy consistency,” Elkins said.
“It’s the best thing I’ve eaten all day,” Epperson joked.
When Wynn asked Epperson what it reminded him of, he said: “An insect.”
Later Wynn and Wasson took some carryout to Sheriff Berl Perdue at his office and let him try one.
“It’s not bad,” he said.
Asked what it tasted like, Perdue replied: “I would say chicken, but it doesn’t taste like chicken.” It was more like deep-fried bread, he added.
Parsons, who made a face when she bit into one, said they were crunchy, but “did not have much of a taste.”
“I don’t think I need to eat them again,” she said.
Elkins later said he would eat them again “if it’s for a good cause.”
Some people call cicadas “locusts,” but they are not closely related to real locusts, which look like grasshoppers. They neither bite nor sting, and only come around every 17 years for about a month.
According to National Geographic News, cicadas are said to be good for eating because they are low in fat and high in protein. They are considered a delicacy by many people around the world.

The second coming of the Mesiamese

I was fast asleep dreaming about puddings and lollypops when what should I hear but the patter of small feet, I lept from my bed with my heart all a flutter was romeo about or was it another? From the bed to the hall to the stairs I ran, listening for more sounds of my little man. Then from the kitchen there came such a clatter romeo was home and looking to get fatter. There was much happiness and loud meowing all about, until Michele came out of the room with a frown on her snout. Look I called out our cat is back. To this she just snarled I don't give a crap. After much petting and hugging he was returned to his bed, where snuggling up he curled on my head.

So after almost 2 weeks the lost one returned he was pretty beat up looks like he got in a fight and he was definantly skinnier. He showed up about 3 in the morning meowing until we got up and petted him becuase he had missed us. We were very glad to see him even though he was so excited to be home he wouldn't shut up and kept michele up the rest of the night. So after a bath (that pissed him off) and a pound of cat food he is back to his normal self.

The end of an era.

Well we are posting this blog to inform you of our loss. Romeo our beloved Siamese had been catnapped. He has been missing for about a week now and we hope that he has either found another nice family or he comes home to us. Michele is quite happy about this development but I am very sad as he is my pet and takes after me, fat, lazy, happy, snuggly all those things. I suspect external involvment in his catnapping but Michele is denying any wrongdoing in connection with his disappearance. He usually wears a collar but it fell off about 2 months ago and we had not got him a new one yet. In his absence we (well i should say me) are considering new pet options as we still have chicky a left over from mom and dad we don't want her to get lonely. I am voting for wienie dog but I don't think it is going to happen. Anyway we will keep you up dated on the status of romeo so keep your eyes open for a overweight siamese that is scared of everything.

Sincerely
Supporters of Romeo the cat.

Memories of Clyde

Since today is Papa's Day, I thought I'd share my favorite memories of mine.

1- Having water fights with dad when he would stand outside and spray the driveway with the hose, I love a good water fight!

2- Pretending that I didn't want to be tickled (although I wasn't pretending to
NOT LIKE his socks in my face)

3- Snowmobiling and riding our little moped through the field across the street. Remember those hills? I use to think there were rattle snakes in that field.

4- Drinking the rest of dad's drink after they got back from going out with the Roundy's, I loved those Cherry 7-Ups.

5- Nicknames, even though mine wasn't the most affectionate.

6- Even he was mad at us, he never yelled at us.

7- I also loved Neil Diamond and the Oak Ridge Boys in the car. Remember playing the drums at the opening of "Coming to America" on the back of the red car?

8- Our playhouse that dad built us in the backyard.

9- Dad's patience in letting us have wild and LOUD sleep overs on the trampoline

10- Hot dogs and macaroni

Love ya dad!

Hey Chance...

Are you going to visit Julie and Bryce at the same time or at different times? I can pretty much go wherever so let me know where you will be and we can go there to!

OKAY CHANCE! IS THERE ANOTHER POOCHIE ON THE WAY OR WHAT???

Spill it Chance and Alyse, is there going to be a sibling for the Dantanator or not?

Why don't we plan a family reunion for summer 2009?

Hey! We need to have an official family reunion. I think it's great to get together, but we need to start an annual reunion. We can plan them so we take turns planning the locations by family. We could start with mom and dad, and maybe go to Zions Park 2009. Then start with the oldest, Bryce, Justin etc.... What do you think?

i vote chicago

so on the get together thing. i vote from a finacially motivated stand point. one I ham already going to visit both bryce and julie this year. tickets already bought and time off work. so that makes me think you all come here or go there when we do because i dont think i can swing it twice.

p.s my dates are the 12 -19 of august

Sorry, I changed things around and some things go erased!

Hi guys,

I hope you like the new look, if you don't it's easy to change. I just wanted to do something different.

Bryce- I don't know how to get your music back up so i just put mine on. You can delete it and put yours back on. Sorry!

Niesja

So how do we all get together?

Hi all,

I was just wanting to start a little survey to see what everyone can do for either some time later in the year or Christmas when we can all get together.

I know Bryce has mentioned getting Natalie sealed so maybe we could all go there around Christmas time and get a hotel or something.

Or we could do it in Utah,

Or we could all meet somewhere totally randem and just have a good time.

Some of my thoughts are....

We could all go to Chicago
We could all get a house rental somewhere in the mountains and go skiing or something
We could all go to parents and some of us can stay with different people if there is not enough room.

Let me know what all of you think, because plane tickets are getting quite in sane and I need to plan out my life before it eats me alive!

Love you all,

Niesja

Coming to America

You know I really used to love that Neil Diamond song I would sit out in the big old white car that we had and listed to dads tape of neil and keep playing that song over and over. Well now that we are all back in the lower 48 states I must say how nice it is to have everyone so close....well closer compared to the phillipines. I just finished picking the old man up at the air port and taking him home it was nice to just chat for an hour even if it was 1 AM. I had to drink a big energy drink to stay awake to go get him and now I can't sleep. So here I sit on my computer typing trying to make my mind work enough to come up with something interesting....i can't i think i will go make a burrito and watch a movie.

love ya all

WHAM! BAM! KAPOWEE!

Somewhere in the far reaches of space, is a bizarre little place called Winchester, KY. In the land of Winchester, there are strange creatures called hillbillies, and sometimes these hillbillies beat each other to a pulp as a means of recreation. Maybe National Geographic will come to Winchester to do a piece on the strange practices of the hillbillies, such as eating squirrel, opossum and feasting on fried frog legs. As I was making my way through the Northern section of Winchester, 2 hillbillies jumped out of a minivan and pummeled a young man right before my eyes. They hit him in the back, and then punched him in the nose. The poor guy fell to the ground and they continued to kick and punch him, the poor guy was a mess, I honked and honked my horn in hopes they'd stop, but they kept right on kicking. So, I got on my cell phone and called 911, it took them almost 30 minutes to get there. After the hillbillies left, I had to hold a towel to his head, it was split right open, and his nose was definitely broken. His hand was in tatters, I felt so bad for him, and I was just sick that someone would do such a thing! I never thought I'd see the day I watched someone get pummeled, but then I never thought I'd see the day of flying trampolines either.

my shweet family.

So Niesja I am proud of you for going back to church. you are the best and we are all here for you.

Julie I wish I could have seen you tell that lady to get out of your house, I bet it was funny to watch even though the situation sucked.

Bryce, cant wait for you all to get here I really want to meet my niece. I told Alyse that you were going to leave the country with your middle finger in the air because of all the grief this adoption has caused. she told me to be nice (let me know what you do...)

Justin, the proud pappa is also the best nieghbor to have around (a mile counts as a nieghbor). always there for any thing we could think of to use him for.

I love you all. thanks for the birthday wishes.

chance

p.s. I love mom and dad too. (to many things to say)

Okay- I just have to brag a little but....

Olivia just spelled her name! She loves to have me write her name over and over again with crayons. It is one of her favorite things to do. Laura doesn't really care so much, but Olivia is definitely more academic than Laura. Ivy is a good mixture of the twins.

IT JUST PLAIN SUCKS!!!

The morning began just like any other, I'm on Spring Break, so I was taking this opportunity to sleep in. It was raining outside, and there was a severe weather alert out for the county--no alarm, no getting out of bed for me! The wind started picking up, and it started hailing, slowly but surely things were getting worse outside. Austin was sitting downstairs when a loud gush rumbled the whole house, and he just happened to look out the window and see our tree parallel to the ground, and our trampoline lift up off the ground, nearly 40 feet, and soar over the top of our neighbor's house. What do you do when your trampoline disappears over the top of your house? Well, I didn't know what to do either, it's not exactly something you plan for. We were worried that perhaps someone may have gotten hurt, we waited until things calmed down a bit, hopped in the car, put the kids downstairs to be safe just in case, and headed out to track down that blasted trampoline!

We found it all right, lying in the street in pieces, as well as the car that it hit, let me rephrase, SUV that it hit (that makes it even better). The SUV had been a graduation present to the high school girl that was standing outside looking more than just a little ticked off. It was still pouring rain, and I was in my lovely and most stylish polka-dot pajamas. We ran home to change and came right back to clean up the trampoline. We were all soaked to the bone! While we were off disposing of the trampoline, Ali and Taylon are at home scared half out of their wits because the wind is still howling and the rain is still pouring, a perfect setting for the wicked witch to return home--the mother of the owner of the now smashed SUV. The high school girl was outside sweeping up glass in the rain when the mother returned home, and she was more than a little bit peeved that we weren't there helping (duh! we were getting rid of the trampoline!) She was at my door the second we walked in--still soaking wet, and let us have it! She demanded that we take care of it immediately, and said that it was our fault, and that we had to go get her daughter a rental car. I was taken aback! This was so strange, we were trying to be so helpful and nice, we wanted to help and get it taken care of, it was a freak of nature, an act of God, we certainly didn't throw the trampoline over the fence at their car!

Finally, I told her to get out of my house, and she did so, slamming the door behind her. Of course, I called dad bawling like the big baby that I am, and he called her and let her have it just for me. (He even said naughty words in my behalf--you go dad!)

Well, after a long day of dealing with adjusters and insurance dudes, it was determined that it was no ones fault, the insurance companies said they would take care of the cost of repairing the car, and we don't have to pay anything thank heaven! She has still threatened to sue us for her lost wages and other silly expenses. All I have to say, is take a chill pill lady! We are not dishonest, heartless people, we would never leave them without helping to take care of the problem. Oh well! At least no one was hurt, I would feel terrible if someone got crushed or killed!

We will never own another trampoline in my life! Never!

Thanks dad for taking care of your little girl! A girl always needs her daddy!

Thanks Austin for having a cool head and staying calm in the midst of a crisis!

Thanks for being such a great family! I love you guys!

Thank you for being here

Hi guys,

Today has been really hard for me, I went to church yesterday with Ethan and no Derick... It's hard to have everyone want to know all about you when your husband isn't there. They also called in our records and me and Ethan were just there with no Derick. It was a little heart breaking. I don't tell Derick these things because it hurts him but I sure wish he was sharing this part of life with me.

Then today I started to get all the phone calls from all of my tenants yelling at me because they received rent increases over the weekend. Some are patient, some yell and others are just vulgar and rude so I have had to put out multiple fires today while feeling sad too.

I guess I'm not depressed I'm just a little sad because I feel alone sometimes but I know I'm doing the right thing. I logged on to the family website and I felt so much better to know that all of you are there. It makes it seem like you aren't so far away and that we are a lot closer.

Thanks for doing this website with me, it makes me feel happy!

Love you guys,

Niesja
